Attract Customers On Twitter By Being… Cool

by Jason on January 27, 2010

There’s a lot of buzz about Twitter – it’s even being mentioned in political speeches. But how can you build your business using Twitter?

This story will give you some good ideas.

The other day I was browsing through my Twitter posts and someone I follow mentioned I should follow @therisetothetop on Twitter. Following someone allows you to see the messages or “tweets” they post on Twitter (sign up for my newsletter if you’d like to learn more about Twitter and Twitter jargon).

I did and then I was able to see the “tweets” from @therisetothetop which is run by David Siteman Garland.

Here’s how it all went down (in Tweets):

“Spent an hour checking out the @hubspot web site hubspot.com and @therisetothetop – lots of marketing tips for small businesses”

“@JasonRAyers Thanks, Jason. Glad you found us useful. What other things would you like to see?”

“@TheRiseToTheTop Your welcome. How about your thoughts on how small businesses can build a list of online followers?”

“@JasonRAyers: The 140 chars-or-less answer: Offer up a handshake like you are doing right now by reaching out.”

“@JasonRAyers Why don’t I answer that next week on the show for you? Cool?”

“@TheRiseToTheTop I’ll look foward to show next week. Thanks.”

When I visited his web site this week, he had posted a video about making introductions between the people you know that might have a basis for doing business together. Not only is this a nice thing to do for people, it has a way of benefiting you as well. This was great – I had a question and he answered it with a video on his site.

David essentially used Twitter to survey a potential customer (me) and then he provided what I was asking for. I was appreciative, so I posted this response on Twitter:

“@TheRiseToTheTop Just watched the video on http://therisetothetop.com – thanks for answering my question with this weeks post! Great stuff.”

Now there is a good chance one of the people following me will visit David’s web site or follow him on Twitter and go through the same relationship building process I went through. David’s smart – he’s using Twitter to build a list of potential customers by using good marketing practices and by being… cool.

Psst…
